Reasons to Wear a Motorcycle Helmet

By Frank Medley

The majority of motorcycle riders always wear their helmets. But many choose not to wear a helmet during their rides. Is it safe to ride without a helmet? Should you always wear a motorcycle helmet?

What are the reasons that someone wouldn't wear a helmet, a piece of gear designed for protection? Some cannot afford a helmet. Where it isn't required, others argue they don't want to, that they like the freedom.

There are also always tales within the cycling community about how someone was badly injured or even killed because of their helmet, similar to stories about deadly seatbelts. These may inspire some riders to feel safer without one.

These tales are exaggerated and perpetuate a false stereotype. Numerous studies have shown that wearing a motorcycle helmet can help to prevent injury and death if a rider is involved in a crash.

When you're a motorcyclist, you know that there is a common idea that you've either been in an accident, or you will eventually be. Motorcycles can be easily involved in a variety of minor and major accidents.

These accidents, even small ones, can be made drastically worse if you are not wearing a motorcycle helmet for every ride. They are made specifically to protect the head and neck of riders.

Another tip is to never buy a used helmet. If a helmet has been dropped, or worn during an accident, it is worthless, much like a bumper that has already been hit. And there is often no way to tell.

The decision to wear a motorcycle helmet is not always a personal one. Many cities and states require you to wear one anytime you ride on or operate a motorcycle. But regardless, they should always be worn. - 20605
